Description

The Hanes 5170 is the EcoSmart ComfortBlend tee, a 5.2 oz 50/50 cotton/polyester jersey that is pre-shrunk and built with about 5% of the fabric from recycled polyester spun from plastic bottles. It is the budget 50/50 a shop reaches for when a program wants the lower shrink and faster dry of a poly blend over a 100% cotton tee at a working unit cost, the default for school PE and spirit wear, team practice shirts, promotional giveaways, uniform programs, and any high-count run where double-needle durability and a wide size range from S to 5XL matter more than a ring-spun cotton hand. The 50% polyester cuts shrink and speeds drying while the 50% cotton keeps a soft, printable cotton face, and the lay-flat rib collar and double-needle sleeve and bottom hems hold up through repeated industrial wash cycles.

The 5170 is a balanced 50% cotton, 50% polyester blend, and that even split decides every decoration method. For screen printing, print straight on white and the lightest colours, and lay a white underbase with low-bleed inks at a moderate, not hot, cure on the darker and heathered colours, since the 50% polyester can migrate garment dye into the print if the cure runs hot. For DTF, a transfer bonds to the cotton/poly face at a controlled press temperature, the most consistent single method across the whole colour card including the heathers. For DTG, the 50% cotton in the face takes pre-treat and ink and prints more vibrantly than a poly-majority blend, though it reads a touch softer than a 100% cotton tee, so reserve the brightest DTG work for the lighter colours. For embroidery, the midweight 5.2 oz body holds a left-chest design with a standard cut-away backing. For vinyl and HTV, a poly-friendly heat-transfer vinyl presses clean on the blended face at a controlled temperature. Discharge does not apply as a clean method, since discharge strips dye from cotton only and the 50% polyester stays dyed, so the result is a muted, faded heathered effect rather than a clean knockout; route soft-hand prints to a plastisol over a poly-block or to DTF. Sublimation does not apply either, since a clean sublimation print needs a high-polyester light substrate and the 50% cotton in this blend will not hold the dye.

The reorder note specific to this style: the 5170 is a 50/50 blend on every colour, so the darker and heathered shades print most reliably over a white underbase with a moderate cure to hold the poly dye out of the print, and the EcoSmart blend keeps shrink low across wash cycles for consistent fit on a reorder. Pair the 5170 with the Gildan G800 DryBlend when a program wants a slightly heavier 50/50 hand, and reach for the Jerzees 29M Dri-Power when the lowest possible unit cost on a 50/50 decides the order. TheClothingSpace stocks the 5170 at wholesale pricing with bulk discounts that increase as case and unit quantities rise, among the lowest prices online for this style, with fast US shipping on stocked colours.

Fabric Blend by Color Group

Not all colorways share the same fabric composition. Check the blend before ordering for decoration jobs where substrate matters.

Color Group Blend Print Consideration
Lightest colours (White, Ash, Light Steel, Light Blue, Pale Pink, Yellow, Gold) 50/50 cotton/polyester Cleanest print on the card; least dye migration, print straight or with a light underbase, the brightest DTG result on the card
Mid colours (Carolina Blue, Kelly, Teal, Orange, Safety Orange, Safety Green, Lime, Smoke Gray, Oxford Gray, heathered shades) 50/50 cotton/polyester Lay a white underbase for opacity and use a low-bleed ink or DTF film at a moderate cure, since the 50% poly migrates; treat the heathered shades as the most migration-prone in this group
Dark colours (Black, Navy, Heather Navy, Deep Royal, Deep Red, Cardinal, Maroon, Purple, Deep Forest, Charcoal Heather) 50/50 cotton/polyester Heaviest dye migration; lay a white underbase over a grey poly-block for screen print and a low-bleed DTF base, cure at a moderate temperature to hold the garment dye out of the print

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hanes 5170 EcoSmart tee is 5.2 oz/yd2 of a 50/50 cotton/polyester ComfortBlend jersey, pre-shrunk, with about 5% of the fabric spun from recycled polyester. It has double-needle stitched sleeves and bottom hem, a lay-flat rib-knit collar and a tagless neck label in a classic unisex cut, and the 50% polyester cuts shrink and speeds drying versus a 100% cotton tee.
Yes to both. For screen printing the Hanes 5170, print straight on white and the lightest colours, and lay a white underbase with low-bleed inks at a moderate cure on the darker and heathered colours, since the 50% polyester can migrate garment dye into the print if the cure runs hot. DTG works well because the 50% cotton in the face takes pre-treat and ink and prints more vibrantly than a poly-majority blend, reading only slightly softer than 100% cotton.
Neither prints cleanly on the Hanes 5170. Discharge strips dye from cotton only, so on this 50/50 blend the polyester stays dyed and the result is a muted, faded heathered effect rather than a clean knockout. Sublimation needs a high-polyester light substrate, and the 50% cotton will not hold the dye. For a soft hand on the 5170, route the print to a plastisol over a poly-block or to a DTF transfer.
All three are 50/50 cotton/polyester blend tees. The Hanes 5170 is the lightest at 5.2 oz and adds EcoSmart recycled content for a low-shrink workhorse. The Gildan G800 DryBlend runs a touch heavier at 5.6 oz for more hand, and the Jerzees 29M Dri-Power is also 5.6 oz at the lowest unit cost of the three. All three print best over a white underbase on darks and route well to DTF, and none take a clean discharge.
Yes. TheClothingSpace stocks the Hanes 5170 EcoSmart 50/50 tee at wholesale pricing with bulk discounts that increase as case and unit quantities rise, among the lowest prices online for this style. It is available by the piece or the case, and pricing improves on multi-case and full-program orders. Stocked colours ship fast within the US, which keeps lead times short on high-count 50/50 runs.
