What Are DTF Transfers?

DTF (Direct-to-Film) transfers are full-color, ready-to-press designs printed onto a PET film with water-based inks and hot-melt adhesive powder. You apply them with a heat press at 320-330°F for 10-15 seconds. No weeding, no pre-treatment, no minimum order quantity.

DTF works on cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends, nylon, canvas, and most other fabric types. A single press cycle bonds the full-color image permanently. Wash durability on properly pressed transfers averages 50+ commercial wash cycles on cotton-weight garments.

How to Apply DTF Transfers

Pre-press the garment for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture. Place the transfer film face-down on the decoration area. Press at 320-330°F (160-165°C) for 10-15 seconds with medium-firm pressure. Peel the film while warm (hot peel). For polyester below 60% poly content, cold peel produces sharper edges. For heathers and blends, place a Teflon sheet over the transfer before pressing to prevent scorching.

DTF vs Screen Printing vs HTV

Screen printing remains the most cost-effective method for large single-design runs (100+ pieces). DTF is the better choice for small batches, full-color photographic designs, and multi-name or multi-number runs. HTV (heat transfer vinyl) requires weeding and is limited to solid colors or simple fills. DTF has no weeding step and handles full-color gradients, fine detail, and halftones that HTV cannot replicate.

UV DTF Transfers: Hard Surfaces and Specialty Items

UV DTF transfers use UV-cured inks instead of water-based inks, producing a rigid, self-adhesive decal that does not require a heat press. They bond to glass, ceramic, metal, wood, acrylic, leather, and most rigid surfaces. Standard textile DTF transfers will not adhere to hard surfaces. UV DTF fills a gap for decorators who want to offer branded tumblers, mugs, phone cases, and similar hard goods alongside garment decoration.

Gang Sheets: Maximizing Print Efficiency

A gang sheet arranges multiple designs on a single film sheet to reduce per-design cost. Instead of ordering each design separately, you fill a 22x60-inch or 22x120-inch sheet with your full run: multiple name drops, small logos, back prints, and sleeve prints in a single order. Gang sheets are billed by the sheet size, not per design. For shops running team orders, event merch, or multi-piece sets, gang sheets cut transfer cost by 40-60% compared to single-piece orders.

DTF Transfers FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About DTF Transfers

DTF (Direct-to-Film) is a decoration method where full-color designs are printed onto a PET film using water-based inks, coated with hot-melt adhesive powder, and cured. The finished transfer is applied to fabric with a heat press. No weeding, no pre-treatment, and no screen setup. It works on cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and canvas.
Standard press temperature is 320-330°F (160-165°C) for cotton, cotton-poly blends, and most fabrics. For 100% polyester and performance fabrics, reduce to 270-290°F to prevent scorching. Press time is 10-15 seconds at medium-firm pressure. Always pre-press the blank for 3-5 seconds to remove moisture before applying the transfer.
Hot peel immediately after pressing is standard for cotton and cotton-heavy blends. Peel the film within 5 seconds of lifting the heat press. For polyester under 60% poly content, cold peel (wait 15-30 seconds) produces sharper edge definition. If edges lift or the image looks dull after hot peel, switch to cold peel.
DTF transfers bond to cotton, polyester, cotton-poly blends (any ratio), nylon, canvas, denim, and most synthetic fabrics. They do not require pre-treatment on polyester, unlike DTG. The main exception is waterproof or DWR-coated fabrics , the coating prevents adhesion. Heavily textured fabrics like terry cloth or thick fleece may show reduced edge sharpness due to surface irregularity.
Yes. DTF is one of the few decoration methods that works on 100% polyester without pretreatment complications. Press at 270-290°F (not the standard 320-330°F) for 10-12 seconds. Use a Teflon sheet or parchment over the transfer to prevent shine and scorching. Cold peel after pressing for best results on poly.
Properly applied DTF transfers average 50+ commercial wash cycles before visible degradation on cotton-weight garments. Wash in cold water, tumble dry low. High heat in the dryer accelerates cracking on any transfer type. On polyester, durability is similar if applied at correct temperature. Transfers applied at too-low temperature or insufficient pressure will peel earlier regardless of fabric.
A gang sheet is a single film sheet containing multiple designs arranged closely together to maximize material use. Instead of ordering each design on a separate sheet, you fill a 22x60 or 22x120-inch sheet with your full print run: name drops, logos, small graphics, sleeve prints. Billed by sheet size, not per design. Gang sheets reduce per-transfer cost by 40-60% versus ordering single transfers.
Use the Gang Sheet Builder product to arrange designs directly in your browser , upload multiple files, set sizes, and position them on the sheet. Alternatively, upload a pre-built gang sheet as a single print-ready PNG at 300 DPI minimum via the Gang Sheet Upload product. Gang sheets must be sized at 22 inches wide (maximum) and any length in multiples of 12 inches.
PNG is preferred for transparent backgrounds. SVG is accepted for vector artwork. JPEG works for photographic prints but has no transparency support. Minimum resolution is 300 DPI at the intended print size. To calculate pixels needed: multiply the desired print size in inches by 300. A 12x12-inch print requires a 3600x3600-pixel file minimum.
Avoid gradients fading to transparent , these leave visible film edges on dark fabrics. Avoid very fine lines under 1pt at small sizes; they may not transfer cleanly. Avoid neon and glow effects that rely on screen brightness. Do not submit mirrored artwork unless specifically instructed. Keep a minimum 0.5-inch margin from the transfer edge for any detail you want to survive washing.
UV DTF uses UV-cured inks instead of water-based inks, producing a self-adhesive rigid decal that does not require a heat press. You peel the backing and press the decal onto the surface by hand. UV DTF bonds to glass, ceramic, metal, wood, acrylic, leather, and most non-fabric hard surfaces. Standard textile DTF will not adhere to hard surfaces. UV DTF is for tumblers, mugs, phone cases, signage, and similar items.
UV DTF bonds to smooth or lightly textured hard surfaces: glass, stainless steel, ceramic, powder-coated metal, wood, acrylic, leather, and hard plastic. It does not adhere to fabric. Curved surfaces up to approximately 3-inch diameter (standard tumbler circumference) work well. Very rough or porous surfaces (uncoated concrete, raw wood) reduce adhesion.
No. UV DTF transfers are self-adhesive and applied by hand. Peel the clear carrier film, align the decal onto the clean, dry surface, press firmly from center outward to remove air bubbles, then peel the protective layer. No heat required. Clean the application surface with isopropyl alcohol before applying for best adhesion.
There is no minimum order quantity. Order a single transfer by selecting the DTF Transfers by Size product and choosing your print dimensions. Gang sheets are ordered as complete sheets and are available in multiple sheet sizes. Pricing is per square inch for single transfers and per sheet size for gang sheets.
DTF and UV DTF orders are produced and shipped next business day. Orders placed before the daily production cutoff ship the following business day. Standard ground shipping to most US addresses arrives in 2-5 business days. If you order both DTF transfers and blank apparel in the same order, they ship separately , apparel ships from the warehouse, transfers ship from the production facility.
Yes. Add both DTF transfers and blank apparel to the same cart. They will be processed and shipped separately , apparel ships from the warehouse directly, DTF transfers ship from the production facility. Both ship to the same destination address. This setup lets you receive transfers and blanks around the same time for in-house pressing.
A commercial or semi-commercial clamshell or swing-arm heat press is strongly recommended for consistent results. Consumer flat irons and craft heat presses often cannot maintain even pressure and accurate temperature across the full print area, which causes incomplete adhesion and early peeling. A 15x15-inch commercial heat press covers standard T-shirt print areas fully.
DTG (direct-to-garment) prints directly onto the fabric using a specialized inkjet printer, requiring pre-treatment on dark cotton fabrics. DTF prints to film first, then transfers to fabric. DTF works on any fabric without pre-treatment, costs less per piece at small quantities, and produces more vibrant colors on dark fabrics. DTG offers a softer hand feel on light cotton. For most wholesale decorator use cases, DTF is faster to set up and more versatile across fabric types.
Yes, with adjustments. Increase press pressure slightly for thicker fabrics to ensure full contact across the print area. For hoodies with a front pocket seam or zipper, use a heat press pillow to keep the platen level. Apply transfers away from seams where possible. Press time may increase by 2-3 seconds on fleece-weight fabrics to ensure the adhesive bonds through the thicker surface.
