Cotton T-Shirts for Every Print Method and Program Type

4.2–6.1 oz Weight range across cotton styles in this collection
100+ Colorways on Bella+Canvas 3001C and Gildan G500
3 Cotton constructions: open-end, ring-spun, garment-dyed

100% cotton t-shirts are the standard substrate for screen printing in wholesale blank apparel programs. Cotton accepts plastisol ink directly without dye migration, making it the default choice for decorators running high-volume spot-color work. The key differences between cotton blanks at different price points are fiber construction (ring-spun versus open-end), fabric weight, and surface texture , each affects ink adhesion, post-wash print durability, and the fabric hand after repeated laundering.

Ring-Spun vs Open-End Cotton Construction

Open-end (OE) cotton is produced faster and at lower cost than ring-spun. Gildan G500 at 5.3 oz/yd2 is the standard OE cotton screen printing blank for volume programs where cost per dozen is the primary driver. Ring-spun cotton uses continuous spinning to create a smoother, denser surface. Bella+Canvas 3001C Airlume combed and ring-spun at 4.2 oz/yd2 is lighter and softer , the choice for retail-quality decorated apparel and DTF transfer programs where fabric softness affects the perceived value of the finished piece. Hanes Beefy-T 5180 is 6.1 oz/yd2 OE cotton for programs requiring a heavier, more durable garment. For most screen printing programs running spot colors on cotton, the choice between OE and ring-spun comes down to whether the end customer will notice a softness difference. For promotional, corporate, and event programs at scale, G500 is the standard. For retail-quality wholesale, 3001C or Next Level 3600 are the primary alternatives.

Plastisol Screen Printing on 100% Cotton

Plastisol ink bonds to cotton fibers and cures at standard flash temperatures (320-330F on most presses) without color shift at cure. 100% cotton eliminates dye migration risk, which is the white-ink bleed-through issue that occurs when polyester content in the fabric is heated during screen printing cure cycles. For dark cotton garments, underbase opacity varies by construction: OE cotton typically requires 4-6 squeegee passes of white underbase to achieve coverage; ring-spun constructions achieve comparable opacity in 3-4 passes because the tighter surface distributes ink more consistently. Printing cotton does not require the low-bleed or polyester-specific inks needed for polyester-blend fabrics.

DTF and DTG on Cotton T-Shirts

DTF heat transfers apply to 100% cotton at standard press settings: 165C (330F), medium pressure, 15 seconds, cold-peel on most film types. Cotton lacks the polymer coating that makes DTF particularly durable on polyester, so adhesion quality on cotton depends on transfer film type and press temperature consistency. DTG printing bonds directly to cotton fibers. Dark-colored cotton garments require aqueous pretreatment before DTG printing; white and light cotton garments print without pretreatment. Cotton content at 60% or above is the standard minimum for DTG programs running production volume.

Buyer's Guide

Cotton Construction by Decoration Method

Gildan G500 for Screen Printing at Volume

Gildan G500 (5.3 oz, 100% preshrunk heavy cotton) is the most widely ordered blank for plastisol screen printing. Open-end cotton bonds cleanly with ink, the weight holds shape under multi-color registration, and case pricing at volume is very competitive. The standard spec for event tees and promotional programs.

Bella+Canvas 3001C for DTF and DTG

BC 3001C (4.2 oz, Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton) gives DTF transfers sharper edges and better adhesion than open-end cotton. For DTG printing, the tighter ring-spun weave holds ink more evenly. The softer hand also matters for programs where the end customer evaluates the t-shirt quality, not just the print.

Comfort Colors C1717 for Garment-Dye Programs

Comfort Colors C1717 (6.1 oz, ring-spun, garment-dyed) is the standard blank for pigment-wash and vintage-finish merchandise. The dye process creates natural color variation and a pre-washed feel. Screen printing over garment-dye works well with plastisol. Match dye lot carefully for reorders, color variation is part of the product but can affect brand consistency.

Fabric Weight and End-Use Match

4.0-4.5 oz ring-spun (Bella+Canvas 3001C) is right for fashion retail and DTF/DTG work. 5.0-5.5 oz open-end cotton (Gildan G500) is the standard for promotional screen printing. 6.0+ oz garment-dyed (Comfort Colors C1717) is suited to retail-adjacent branded merchandise where the blank quality is part of the sale.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Open-end cotton (used in Gildan G500, Hanes 5280) is produced at a faster, lower-cost process, resulting in a coarser, heavier fabric that bonds well with plastisol screen printing ink. Ring-spun cotton (Bella+Canvas 3001C, Next Level 3600) is combed and twisted under tension to remove short fibers, producing a softer, smoother surface that gives DTF transfers sharper edges and DTG prints more even ink coverage.
The Bella+Canvas 3001C (4.2 oz, Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton) is the most commonly spec'd blank for DTF transfers on cotton tees. The tighter ring-spun weave provides a smoother print surface for better transfer edge definition and adhesion. The Gildan G640 Softstyle (4.5 oz ring-spun) is an alternative at a lower per-unit cost with similar DTF performance.
Yes. Comfort Colors C1717 is a 6.1 oz ring-spun, garment-dyed cotton shirt that accepts plastisol screen printing well. The key consideration is color consistency: the garment-dye process creates natural color variation between shirts in the same dye lot, which can affect the vibrancy of lighter ink colors printed on darker garments. Use an underbase for light inks on dark garment-dyed shirts.
The Gildan G500 is available in over 60 colors. Availability varies by size and season. For exact current color availability, check the individual product page. The most popular colors (white, black, sport grey, navy) are the most reliably stocked for reorders.
